Taking on new home construction is an exciting experience. But as a parent, you’ll need to take extra precautions to ensure your little one is safe throughout the home. Here are a few tips for a child-safe bathroom.

3 Bathroom Design Tips When You Have a Child

1. Lower Fixtures

Fixtures like toilets and countertops are usually chosen with adults in mind, which means your little one won’t be able to reach them. To accommodate your child, lower these features by a foot.

If you’re worried about you and other adults in the house being uncomfortable, consider getting another child-sized toilet and lowering one side of a two-sink counter.

2. Invest in Fall Prevention

Install a grab bar on the wall for added safety. Put it a foot lower to make sure your child can reach it. It’s a useful addition inside and outside the shower, so your child has something to hold onto while they’re getting in and out.

3. Secure Storage

The contents of bathroom cabinets, like medicine, curling irons, or cleaning products, can pose hazards to your child. When designing the bathroom in a new home construction project, move the cabinets up out of their reach. Alternatively, add locks and hide the keys, or use combinations.
