Nowadays, it’s common for colleagues to meet up for happy hour and share a few discounted beers. However, most people have no idea how this term became popular. Here is the history of this term so you can wow your friends the next time you’re out.

A History of Happy Hour

Origins

In the early 20th Century, U.S. Navy sailors would partake in a weekly recreation period called happy hour. This time often included physical activities like boxing and wrestling, as well as shows. Famous entertainers would travel to the various ships to sing and dance for the troops, and those who were docked would sometimes invite civilians onto the vessel for dancing.

Evolution

Around this time, the U.S. made alcohol illegal. The Navy lingo made its way home, and people began calling happy hour the time before dinner when people would gather to drink in secret.

happy hourSome believe the term was publicized in a Saturday Evening Post article, teaching the entire country about happy hour as a time to imbibe and relax together. Others attribute the popularization to a Providence Journal article talking about a policeman who had to leave a happy hour to address a call.

Today

People head to their favorite bars and restaurants to enjoy happy hour specials. Even though this daily offering often lasts longer than an hour, it’s still a time to get together with loved ones or colleagues, enjoy a tasty brew, and forget about the rest of the day. Many restaurants offer discounts and specials on certain drinks and menu items, so make sure to check the options before heading out.
