Heating and cooling account for almost 50% of your home’s energy use. Although the most efficient HVAC systems use more energy during the colder months, you don’t have to break the bank to stay warm. Follow these steps to reduce your energy costs without sacrificing comfort.

A Guide to HVAC System Efficiency in Winter

1. Turn Down the Temperature

If your family is at school or work during the day, you can save HVAC Systemon energy expenses by installing a programmable thermostat. It’ll allow you to turn the temperature down a few degrees when no one is home. Setting the temperature back seven to 10 degrees for eight hours a day can save up to 10% annually.

2. Control the Blinds

Almost one-third of your home’s heat is lost through windows. On sunny winter days, open your blinds and drapery to let the sun in. When sunlight passes into your home, it turns into heat. Similarly, close the blinds in the evening to add a layer of insulation from the cold outside.

3. Inspect Your HVAC System

Regular inspections by an HVAC contractor can reduce energy costs by up to 40%. A dirty or underperforming HVAC system uses more energy to move air and bring your house up to temperature. Also, cracked ducts can leak air into spaces, such as into an unfinished basement or attic, that don’t need to be heated. A contractor will repair cracks and seals so you save energy.

Your central air system should be inspected yearly in the spring, just before you turn it on for the first time. Likewise, the heating system should be checked before first use, usually in late summer or early fall.
