Between a social calendar packed full of parties and delicious food, the holidays may make it difficult to stay on top of your fitness goals. This may be why, on average, Americans put on over one pound during this season. Doctors urge patients to stay within their recommended body mass index, since obesity could lead to health consequences. To help you prevent weight gain when this is a concern, here are a few tips for enjoying the season while reducing cravings.

4 Tips for Healthy Eating During the Holidays

1. Rely on Wholesome Snacks

When you’re out and about running holiday errands, having some healthy snacks on hand can curb your hunger and prevent you from hitting the food court for fast food.

Keep some fruit, nuts, or granola bars in your car or bag to munch on throughout the day.

2. Choose Light Appetizers

If you’re headed to a holiday party, have a light dinner or some healthy snacks (like veggies and hummus) before you leave home. This way, you won't arrive starving and spend the evening nibbling on high-calorie appetizers.

If you’re going out to dinner, start your meal with a broth-based soup or a salad instead of heavy or fried dishes.

3. Stay Hydrated

doctorDoctors recommend drinking around half a gallon of water per day, and this is especially important during the holidays. Staying hydrated helps you feel full longer, so you eat less. Foods with high water content, like fruits and vegetables, also take a longer period to digest, so you can feel full without overeating. Drinking water will also help you avoid getting drunk off of your spiked eggnog

4. Allow Yourself Some Treats

While you shouldn’t overeat, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying small amounts of your favorite treats. Indulging responsibly by controlling your portions will also help you prevent hunger pangs, which end up causing cravings. Even fitness trainers, doctors, and dietitians indulge in some holiday goodness, too, so don't be too hard on yourself if you have a cookie or two.
