When wintertime comes and you no longer need air conditioning, you can extend the life of your AC system by winterizing it. Simple cleaning tasks like air filter changes will prevent clogs from overworking the system later, and covering the outdoor unit prevents it from internal damage. Here are three winter preparation tips for your air conditioning unit.

A Guide to Air Conditioning Tips for Fall

1. Clean Everything

Air conditioningThroughout the year, the outdoor condenser unit accumulates leaves, dead bugs, twigs, dirt, and dust. Use a spray bottle filled with water and a wet rag to gently clean all the debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals because they can damage the delicate internal components of your unit. If it has a cover, clean both sides of that too.

Change the air conditioning filter inside your house as well if you haven't done so within the past three or four months. However, if the filter is reusable, vacuum the screen’s slot to remove dust. Then, rinse the piece outside. Ensure it’s dry before you reinsert it.

2. Cover the Outdoor Unit

After your outside unit is clean and dry, cover it for the winter. If you don't have a cover, buy a tarp from the store to use. You'll shield the unit from icicles, hail, and other winter hazards.

3. Protect Exposed Pipes

Any pipes leading to your outside unit should be protected from the elements before winter hits. Wrap them in foam or fiberglass covers. You can find them at your local home improvement or plumbing supply store.
