A malfunctioning garage door is not only inconvenient, but it’s also a safety and security concern. It can cause serious injury or give uninvited guests access to your home. If you’re experiencing issues with your garage door, it’s important to address it quickly. Here are a few reasons the door may not be working correctly.

Common Issues That Arise With Garage Doors

1. The Springs Are Worn Out

For a garage door to open and close smoothly, the springs must be in good condition. They’re largely responsible for lifting the weight of the door, which places them under tremendous pressure. After repeated use, they’ll eventually begin to weaken and wear out. When this happens, you may notice the garage door won’t move up or down anymore. It’s best to have the springs replaced by a professional, as it can be a dangerous task for someone who lacks the proper tools and knowledge for the job.

2. The Door Isn’t Completely Opening or Closing

It could also be caused by damaged or rusty rollers that either need to be replaced or lubricated. On the other hand, if the door isn’t fully closing, the close-limit switch may require an adjustment. Another reason for this may be misaligned or blocked sensors.

3. The Opener Isn’t Responding

Most homeowners will experience a non-responsive garage door opener at some point. Fortunately, it’s usually an easy fix. If it’s chain or screw-operated, the opener may simply need lubricant to help create friction. If neither the remote or wall switch is working, the motor unit might have come unplugged, or the circuit breaker has burned out and needs to be replaced. As long as the issue isn’t with the remote, contact a repair professional to solve the issue.
