Effective flossing can support the longevity of your teeth while keeping them clean and healthy. Although flossing may seem easy, many people aren’t doing it correctly. Since dentists recommend flossing at least once a day, here are a few tips to follow the next time you clean your teeth.

Flossing Tips for Healthier Teeth & Gums

1. Perfect Your Technique

Wrap about 18 inches of string around your middle fingers, leaving a taught two-inch length between your hands. Wiggle the tight portion gently between the teeth and down to the gums. The floss should create a C-shape around each tooth. Rub the string back and forth and up each crown, unraveling a clean piece to use on every tooth.

2. Reach Your Molars

dentistMany people struggle to reach their molars and opt to forgo flossing the back of their mouth. However, failing to floss leaves these teeth susceptible to decay. To access hard-to-reach areas, spread the floss tightly across your pointer fingers and only put those fingers into your mouth. Press down with your fingers to gently slide the string between the molars. You can also use plastic picks, which are easy to maneuver, to help you reach the back of your mouth.

3. Make Time

Although your mouth may feel minty clean after brushing your teeth, take the time to floss to remove any bacteria the toothbrush left behind. Floss at least once a day, and do it preferably at night after you’ve eaten all your meals. If flossing at home isn’t an option, pack single-use picks so that you can quickly floss during the day. Flossing only takes a few minutes, and you can do it in the bathroom at work or parked in a car.
