Sewing machines can seem complicated to those who don’t know how to use them, but once you master their controls, you can create fantastic pieces. No matter what kind of machine you’re using or how skilled you are at operating it, issues can still occur. If you are having problems with your device, consider these common obstacles that even experienced sewists struggle with.

What Issues Can Occur With Sewing Machines?

1. The Needle Easily Comes Unthreaded

It can be a challenge to thread the needle on a sewing machine, and if it is done incorrectly, the thread can come loose once you begin sewing. One way to avoid this is by threading the needle when it’s at its highest point. Wind the handwheel toward you to thread the needle. Winding it backward can cause threads to tangle and come undone.

2. Needles Keep Breaking

sewing machine Kalispell, MTIf your needle breaks or bends during use, stop the machine immediately and carefully remove it. You could have the wrong type of needle installed for that particular fabric. For example, use a sturdy 18-point needle to sew a hole in denim pants. Always use new needles each time you start a new project to prevent it from warping due to overuse.

3. Thread Bunches Beneath The Fabric

Knots of thread can become bunched beneath the fabric in the machine for a variety of reasons. The most common cause is that the upper thread has no tension. Remove and re-thread both the top thread and bobbin according to the instructions on your sewing machine. Adjust the tension, using strips of fabric as test pieces until you find the best setting.
