Though a squeaky door hinge is a minor household issue, it can become quite a nuisance and make your property less peaceful. Fortunately, several quick fixes can make the opening and closing of your doors practically inaudible. Read on for a handful of helpful door repair tips.

Door Repair for Squeaky Hinges

1. Tighten Screws

Loose screws are common causes of squeaky doors. Use a screwdriver or electric drill to tighten the hinge plates, taking care not to strip them or damage the wood. If the screws become stripped, replace them with slightly longer ones that fit securely into the frame.

Lubricants, penetrating oils, and water-displacing sprays are often helpful for combating squeaky doors. Apply a small amount of the product to the hinges. Take the opportunity to also add lubricant to the keyhole to prevent sticking.

3. Clean the Hinge Pins

In some cases, your hinge pins need cleaning. Remove them from your squeaky doors and scrub them with steel wool pads to remove dirt and grime. For particularly stubborn buildup, use a household cleaner. Prevent rusting by ensuring the pins are completely dry before replacing them.

4. Use Paraffin Wax

If lubricant proves ineffective, try paraffin wax. Put the substance in a glass dish and microwave it for about two minutes. Roll your door hinges in the wax until it forms an even coat, and allow the layer to cool before replacing the hinges.
