Whether you’ve just had your electrical contractors wire your new home or are updating an existing system, you should take the time to label your electrical panel. This will make it easy to shut off power to the appropriate room or appliance when you need to have work performed or power restored to a specific area after a surge. Follow the steps below for the most effective labeling possible.

An Electrical Contractor Guide to Labeling Your Circuit Breakers

1. Number the Breakers

Each breaker should have its own number. Start at the top left, then move down the column to the bottom. Move to the top of the next column and continue that way until each breaker has a number. For best results, use a small sticky label and a permanent marker to assign the number to the appropriate breaker.

2. Create Your Key

Grab a piece of blank white paper and draw a diagram of the electrical panel. Give each breaker its own box, with the assigned number in the corner of the box.

Leave empty space next to each number so you can write down which devices are controlled by the breaker. When you’re finished, you’ll tape it up on the inside of the panel door.

3. Test the Breakers

Have someone walk around with the key and write down what gained power. You’ll need to plug things into outlets, such as lamps, turn on lights, and check outdoor areas. Cover the entire house, including all appliances, for each to avoid assuming that everything in a room is controlled by one breaker. A breaker could potentially turn on the power to items all over the home.
