As you prepare to open your first flower shop, one of the features you cannot do without is commercial refrigeration. Here, review why the commercial appliances are essential to your shop’s success, as well as different temperature recommendations for plants. You’ll get a working idea of what you need before talking to your HVAC contractor.

Why Refrigeration Matters

Customized floral coolers kept at the correct temperature extend the life of cut flowers. Temperature affects everything from buds opening and water retention to stem bending and wilting. By keeping cut flowers and plants in hydrating solutions within controlled temperature environments, they are better able to retain moisture and stay fresh because their respiration process slows.

And while most flowers have high humidity requirements, they do not benefit from excessively cold temperatures that cause them to freeze. They also do well with gentle breezes that promote air circulation instead of a fast airflow that dries petals and stems.

Commercial refrigeration provides additional flower preservation benefits via ethylene gas filters. Ethylene is an odorless, colorless hormone gas released by plants, flowers, fruits, and vegetables. And while it contributes to the growth process, it also causes cut plants and flowers to spoil prematurely. Filters keep this gas out of refrigeration units for fresher arrangements.

Tropical vs. Non-Tropical Plant Refrigeration Temperatures

While non-tropical plants and flowers generally benefit from temperatures between 34- and 36-degrees Fahrenheit, tropical blooms such as ginger, bird-of-paradise, and certain orchids need temperatures between 50- and 55-degrees Fahrenheit. Review the temperature recommendations for your varieties and keep thermometers in the commercial appliances to prevent wilting, freezing, and other issues.
