When it comes to archery, many people focus on the bow. The arrows play an equally important role, and if you’re new to the sport, knowing where to start isn’t always easy. To ensure the best outcome, use the following tips to help you find the best arrows at your local archery pro shop.

How to Choose Bow Arrows

1. Know Your Draw

First, determine your draw length. You can do this by visiting an archery pro shop and having it measured, or by using a simple calculation. Spread your arms to the sides, forming a straight horizontal line.

Then, have someone measure your wingspan. Divide that length (in inches) by 2.5, and you’ll have an accurate idea of your draw. You can then use this measurement to buy arrows with shafts long enough to match your draw.

2. Pick the Right Weight for Your Goals

For target practice, you’ll want 300 to 360 grains. This is because heavier arrows strike with more force, and lighter arrows are easier to shoot in straight lines.

There are some adjustments to consider, however. As a rule of thumb, make sure the arrow grain is never 5 grains less per pound of your draw weight, so you don’t damage your bow.

3. Choose the Right Material

Cedar arrows are cheap and easy to use for beginners, though they will warp and break over time. Aluminum arrows can be custom designed at an archery pro shop and have improved accuracy, which is why they’re often used in competitions.

Fiberglass arrows are a great middle-ground between wood and aluminum, and carbon arrows are excellent for hunting. If you want professional quality, go with composite.
