Whether you’re planning a tropical island getaway or an international cross-country excursion, having safe and convenient access to funds provides financial peace of mind. You’ll likely use your debit card for meals, souvenirs, and other purchases. It’s critical to protect it so that your checking account isn’t susceptible to scammers. Here are several tips to keep in mind when using your debit card in other countries.

5 Debit Card Usage Tips When Traveling Overseas

1. Let Your Bank Know

At least two weeks before your trip, give your bank a head’s up. Let the representative know what countries you’ll be traveling to and how long your trip will be. As a security precaution to protect their customers, most financial institutions automatically freeze a debit card if it’s used in unexpected spots. If you let your bank know your travel plans in advance, they’ll know not to implement a freeze.

2. Ask About PIN Changes

While the standard four-digit PINs will work at ATMs in countries, there may be issues if your PIN contains zeros. Some non-network ATMs might have problems reading zeros. Ask your bank if you should change your PIN before traveling so that you’ll continue to have access to your checking account.

3. Inspect ATMs Carefully

Look for signs of loose or bent components; there could be a card-skimming device attached. Thieves use it to record PIN keystrokes to gain entry to checking accounts. Pay special attention to where you actually insert your card. Scammers have been known to use tape and other items here to trap debit cards.

4. Carry Cash Safely

The key is to keep the cash in a spot close to the body and away from pickpockets. If your card is stolen or lost, call your bank immediately so that they can put a freeze on it.

5. Protect Your PIN

Always provide cover when entering your PIN. Use a free hand or have someone stand nearby to block others from seeing. Avoid giving your debit card to waiters and others to pay for bills. Ask if you can pay at the register so that you can keep an eye on how your card is being used.
