Major leaks in your plumbing are obvious, as they cause huge stains or flooding, but smaller leaks can go unnoticed. If you have water pressure problems or a rising water bill, but you don’t know the reason, a hidden leak could be the culprit. Plumbers use an array of tools to search for the leak on your walls or underground.

Ways to Discover Hidden Leaks

1. Camera

Plumbers can feed special waterproof cameras into your pipes. This device lets them see your plumbing system from the inside. By inspecting each pipe, they can figure out the location of the leak.

2. Listening Disc

PlumbingThis small disc attachment picks up sounds and feeds them to a set of headphones. Your plumber will hold the disc against your walls over the pipes where they suspect the leak might be. The disc amplifies the sound so they can hear any abnormal water movement from a leak.

3. Soil Probe

A soil probe is a tube-shaped metal tool with a T-handle at the top. Your plumber will use it to collect samples from deep underneath the ground near the pipes in your yard. If water or sewage is seeping into the soil, the samples from the soil probe will be unusually wet in those areas.

4. Thermal Scanner

If cold water is leaking from your plumbing into your walls or floor, it will create cold spots in those areas. If hot water from your water heater is the problem, the area will be warmer than usual. A thermal scanner analyzes hot and cold spots in your home without damaging the building materials.
