If you develop eye redness, pain, or sensitivity suddenly or gradually, visit your eye doctor for a comprehensive exam. You may have uveitis, which is characterized by inflammation of the middle layer of tissue in the uvea, or eyewall. Here’s a brief guide to the condition so you know what to expect regarding its treatment.

What Causes Uveitis?

The underlying cause of uveitis isn't always apparent. Roughly half the time, eye doctors are unable to identify the root of the problem. The other half, the condition is attributed to trauma due to injury or surgery, infection, cancer, an inflammatory disorder, or an autoimmune disorder. Additionally, research has indicated that certain genes can increase the risk of developing uveitis, as can smoking cigarettes

How Do You Treat It?

eye doctorUveitis, itself, may not necessarily be troublesome. Symptoms, which include blurred vision, pain, and redness, are often mild and may only affect one eye. If left untreated, though, the condition could lead to complications like cataracts, glaucoma, renal detachment, and optic nerve damage. As such, it’s wise to schedule an exam right away if you suspect a problem.

If doctors are able to identify the underlying cause of the condition, they’ll attempt to treat that first. This should effectively relieve the associated symptoms of uveitis. Otherwise, the condition can be treated with anti-inflammatory medication in the form of eye drops, pills, or injections. If symptoms don't improve, surgery may be the next step. There are a few simple procedures that can manage the condition should it prove to be chronic.
