If you want a lush expanse of green lawn, it requires much more than just seeding and watering the grass. You must also undertake regular mowing, fertilization, and core aeration.

How Core Aeration Works

Core aeration is considered one of the most important cultural practices available for a lawn. It helps control thatch, improves the soil structure, create growth pockets for new roots, and opens the way for water and fertilizer to reach the root zone of the lawn.

Thatch is organic debris, such as old grass clippings and leaves, that forms a dense layer over the lawn. When soil becomes too densely packed, it blocks sunlight, water, fertilizer, and air from penetrating the soil’s surface and reaching the grass roots.

Core aeration involves perforating the soil and removing hundreds of small cylindrical plugs of soil 1” to 3” in length from the lawn. The holes created by aeration helps remove the obstruction and allows grass to get the fertilizer and let water and oxygen move more freely into the root zone. It causes turf roots to naturally grow toward these growth pockets and supports the healthy growth of a dense root network.

When You Should Aerate

The fall season is a perfect time to aerate, as grass quickly fills in gaps where plugs are removed. Fall aeration is also useful since your lawn likely got heavy use in the summer, thanks to kids and pets playing outdoors.

Regular aeration helps thatch break down naturally by mixing the soil cores into the thatch and speeding up decomposition. Performed once or twice a year per year, aeration significantly reduces thatch and improves turf growth.
