Your gutters do a lot to protect your roof and foundation from water damage—especially during the winter. Homeowners tend to think of them as functional pieces, rather than decorative ones. However, that can sometimes change around the holidays when these channels are affixed with plastic icicles and cheerful lights. But how can you add these flourishes without impeding the gutters from doing their job? The guide below offers some advice.

A Guide to Properly Hanging Outdoor Holiday Lights

What are the best lights to use?

Too much weight hanging from your gutters can cause them the bend, leading to potential drainage problems and roof damage. Stick to lightweight lights that still have ample brightness—such as C7 or C9 bulbs.

Do I have to use clips?

Clips enable you to safely attach the strings of lights to the gutters without causing them any damage. Look for adhesive or all-in-one clips designated for the type of lights you are hanging up. Avoid stapling or nailing them in place.

How do I hang the Christmas lights?

guttersPlug the lights into an extension cord that is long enough to reach the outlet. Place the male end of the cord close to the outlet, but don’t plug it in. Attach your first clip to the edge of the gutter and work your way across, keeping the string of lights taut as you install the clips at even intervals and secure the lights into place.

When you reach the end, either let the lights hang down or continue up towards a peak. Then, plug your extension cord in. Use socket caps or electrical tape to cover the sockets not in use to prevent water damage from snow and rain and keep your lights from shorting out.
