Sustaining an injury can be unsettling, especially if it affects your range of motion. However, shoulder dislocations are fairly common and can be treated successfully in an urgent care facility. The guide below explains what to expect from this condition and the subsequent treatment.

What Is a Dislocated Shoulder?

Simply put, a dislocated shoulder involves the humerus becoming displaced from the cup-shaped socket located in the scapula. As a result, nearby nerves, muscles, and tendons can become pinched, impacting your ability to move your arm properly and causing a great deal of pain.

Dislocated shoulders have many causes, but trauma to the area is one of the most common. It may have been the result of a car accident, a hit taken in a sports game, or a fall. Shoulders can appear visibly deformed, may be bruised or swollen, and will be very painful to the touch.

How Are They Treated?

urgent careAfter determining the cause of your pain by checking X-rays or images gathered from CT scans or MRIs, medical providers can administer either local or full-body anesthetic to help you to relax while they use manipulation techniques to move your shoulder back into place. In rare cases, surgery may be necessary.

Afterward, they will give you a sling, and suggest you ice the injury for several days while taking pain killers. They might also walk you through exercises to gradually restore your range of motion. Expect to feel better after a few weeks—although, healing may take up to 12. See your doctor again if the pain persists.
