A sprinkler system will help keep your yard looking green and healthy throughout the spring and summer and into the fall. However, when winter rolls around, it may experience damage if water in the pipes and valves freezes and expands. Luckily, with a few simple steps and help from a professional, you can quickly winterize your system so that it’s ready to go again when spring rolls around.

Shut It Down

Before you empty your sprinkler system of water for the winter, turn it off and cut the water supply. If your sprinklers run on a timer, you also need to switch it off or cut the power to the control system.

Drain the Pipes

Some sprinkler systems have release valves to facilitate the draining process. You should also have the system blown out using pressurized air to ensure there’s nothing in your pipes or tubing that could cause damage over the winter.

Insulate Fixtures

Any above-ground valves and backflow preventers are also at risk of damage from winter freezes. To make sure they’re ready to use again in spring, insulate them with foam tape and plastic bags. You should also add insulating tubes around any above-ground pipes to protect them from winter weather.
