Marble countertops have a sleek and sophisticated look while offering a durable and easily maintained surface on which to work. While they are designed to last and can withstand the rigors of frequent daily use, they do require some light maintenance to preserve their strength and visual appeal. To ensure the longevity of your marble countertops, keep the following tips in mind.

Do:

Clean up spills immediately.

While marble is a hard surface, it’s also somewhat porous. This causes it to absorb stains more readily than laminate countertops, for example. So, whenever you spot a spill, clean it up right away to prevent staining. Coffee, wine, fruit juice, and other acidic products can be particularly discoloring.

Use a soft cloth and marble cleaner.

The porous quality of marble countertops also makes them more sensitive to harsh household cleaning agents. These products are often too abrasive and can damage the surface.

Instead, use a cleaner specifically formulated for use on marble counters. Check with the countertop installer or manufacturer and follow their recommendations for the best brand to purchase. Apply the cleanser with a soft cloth or sponge. For lighter spills, hot water may be all that's needed.

Don't:

Sit or stand on the counter.

A countertop can be a tempting height to hop up and sit on; it can also be an appealing target for a child prone to climbing. However, many marble countertops don't have a layer of plywood support underneath, making cracks, splits, and other damage a very real possibility when too much weight is added. Initiate a house rule to maintain your counters that prevents anyone from sitting or climbing on them at any time.

Forget storage.

In the bathroom, put a vanity tray under all beauty products to protect the marble surface. All it takes is a neglected drop or two of a staining substance to mar an otherwise pristine look.
