Trees add beauty and character to your landscape. Exposure to fungi and bacteria, however, can cause the flora to become sick. Over time, a diseased tree can cause property damage and impact the health and vitality of neighboring trees. This is why it’s critical to identify disease and resolve it right away. Here are three signs that it’s time to contact your tree service.

How to Tell If a Tree Is Diseased

1. Spotty Leaves

Spots on tree leaves are signs of rust fungus. The mottled marks may appear yellow, gold, orange, or red. Over time, they may become brown as the fungus spreads, and you might notice some powdery clusters form, too. While you can probably scrape off this powdery substance, it weakens the integrity of the leaf and can spread to nearby twigs. Rust fungus is unlikely to kill trees, but your tree service may suggest applying a fungicide to establish control over the problem.

If your trees suffer from fire blight, they might appear as if flames have burned them. This can cause leaves to turn black or brown, and the branches may droop. The bark may also look like it’s been soaked in water before eventually taking on a dark, dry appearance. Blight tends to occur in the summer when humidity levels are high and bacteria spread via rainfall and bees. Your tree service can prune the infected areas to create a healthier tree.

3. Localized Sores

Don’t panic if you spot unusual canker sores on the tree’s trunk or a branch. It may be due to impact from lawn equipment, like a mower, or sunburn or frost. In some cases, however, it’s because bacteria or fungi have affected the surface, leaving it discolored and damaged. If the tree is old, it’s unlikely to kill it, but canker could cause deformities on trees that are under stress, poorly maintained, or injured. Water trees often during drought, wrap thin bark in the winter to prevent frost, and have a tree service perform regular inspections.
