Apple® devices, especially the newer iPhone® models, are designed to be water-resistant. However, it’s wise to avoid water and act quickly if you do drop your phone into water. Appropriate action may save your device, along with all the data that is on it.

3 Steps to Take When Apple Devices Get Wet

1. Turn It Off

apple devicesIt’s tempting to try to turn your device on to see if it still works. However, if there is moisture inside, then trying to work your device may cause new damage. This is because running an electrical charge through a wet circuit could fry the entire circuit. Turn off the device and leave it off.

2. Dry It by Hand

Remove your phone immediately from the water. The longer it stays underwater, the more likely it is to be damaged beyond repair. Dry off the exterior with a soft towel. If you have a case, remove it and any other covers on ports. This will allow it to dry out. Do not use a blow dryer, as the heat from this could cause permanent damage. If you have rice, fill a bag and submerge the phone entirely in it. This will help pull out any excess moisture that is lingering around the edges of your phone.

3. Take It In

Take your device into a computer repair store. Whether your phone was underwater for a second or a minute, you don’t want to try turning it on by yourself. A professional can dry out the interior components and look for visual damage. They’ll ensure the interior circuit is completely dry before turning your device back on. If the phone can be saved, they’ll salvage it. If the device is damaged beyond repair, they may save your data to put on a new iPhone.
