While most staining agents easily wipe up on hardwood, vinyl, ceramic tile, and laminate, carpet typically requires more effort. Stains cling to carpet fibers or soak through to the backing, leaving you with dirty-looking and possibly-odorous flooring. Keep stains from becoming permanent with these tips in addition to regular vacuuming and annual steam cleaning.

How to Eliminate 4 Types Of Carpet Stains

1. Wine

carpetCombine 3 ounces of white vinegar with 6 ounces of water in a spray bottle and apply the mixture to the affected area. Let it stand for about a minute before gently blotting the wine with a paper towel or clean cloth. Continue spraying and blotting until the stain has lifted.

You can also use 1 tablespoon of ammonia combined with 1 cup of water, or mix five drops of unscented liquid dish soap in a cup of warm water to remove wine stains. If you use ammonia, ensure the carpet isn’t wool to avoid damaging it.

2. Pet Urine

Blot urine and semi-solid waste, or pick up solid waste with gloved hands to remove as much of the stain as possible. Mix one-third cup of white vinegar with a quart of warm water in a spray bottle to remove the remaining stain and eliminate the odor. Let the mixture soak for three to five minutes first--if the stain or odor persists, apply straight white vinegar.

3. Glue

Soak a soft cloth or cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and use it to saturate the sticky substance, then wipe it up with your cloth or paper towel. Repeat this process until the glue is gone since it will attract dirt and dust in addition to sticking to feet and paws.

4. Coffee

Remove coffee stains on your carpet by soaking as much of it as you can with a paper towel. Mix 1 tablespoon of dish soap with 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide and let it stand for a few minutes. Gently rub the stain and keep using the mixture until the fibers are clean.

Add one-quarter cup of white vinegar and 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap to a water-filled spray bottle and let it soak for five minutes before blotting as another coffee stain removal option.
