Hydraulic cylinders play essential roles in industrial machinery, vehicles, and systems. However, there are several types to choose from when starting a project, which is why it’s important to understand the difference between single and double acting systems. If you’re new to the topic, learn more about these options to help you make the right decision.

Single Acting

A single acting cylinder fires hydraulic fluid into a cylinder from one direction. The weight of a load will then retract to a built-in spring and piston, and the cylinder will support it. This design also helps the cylinder safely catch the responding force.

hydraulic cylindersThe simple design is conveniently sized and requires few parts, making these cylinders easy to maintain. However, springs will eventually wear down and may not provide reliable use as the cylinder ages. The spring may also warp, and contaminants entering through the ventilation system may slow down function. For optimal use, they’re best used in indoor machinery bearing lighter loads, so the system isn’t overworked or contaminated.

Double Acting

Double acting hydraulic cylinders have become the industry standard. They function by pumping hydraulic fluid in either direction to control extension and contraction. This is ideal for machines and joints that need to move in several directions because it provides superior control and accuracy.

They do have a larger housing, so the machinery will need to accommodate that. They’re also more expensive to purchase and install. However, since there’s no spring system, you won’t have to worry about long-term wear, and the closed-off design is less likely to be contaminated.
