A severe winter storm or blizzard can affect power lines, block roads, and cut off access to crucial services and amenities. Whenever there is a prediction for a major weather event, stocking up on essential goods at the supermarket will ensure the health, safety, and comfort of those in your household. Below are five of the most important items to purchase.

What Should You Buy Before a Big Winter Storm?

1. Bottled Water

Fresh water will help everyone stay well-hydrated and let them bathe, groom, and brush their teeth. The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that each person should have one gallon of water per day for at least three days; however, if you have a two-week supply, it ensures that you’re prepared if the storm is longer than the original forecast. Also, store one gallon per day for each pet.

2. Canned Goods

supermarketCanned goods are nonperishable, so they are well-suited for a storm emergency kit. Choose a few supermarket canned items like tuna, beans, carrots, soup, and chili that provide protein and other nutrients.

3. Baby Food & Supplies

In addition to baby food and formula, stock diapers, wipes, rash cream, and baby shampoo. If your little one requires any medications, such as children’s Tylenol®, make sure you have enough to last for at least the next couple of weeks.

4. Pet Food & Supplies

Your pet will need food and water, to be best prepared, make sure to have enough food and treats for our furry friends! If your pet takes medications, have a two-week reserve in case the storm keeps the family stranded for several days.

5. Hygiene Supplies

Purchase bulk sets of toilet paper, paper towels, wet wipes, and heavy garbage bags to dispose of trash. Hygiene supplies are also critical, so you'll want to buy deodorant, hand sanitizer, soap, and shampoo. First-aid necessities, including bandages and antibiotic ointment, shouldn't be overlooked.
