Flossing is an essential component of daily oral care. It removes stubborn food particles and plaque from between the teeth, thereby helping to keep the teeth and gums protected against harmful bacteria. While most dental patients may not realize it, there are many styles of floss available to suit each individual’s unique needs. Here are some of the most popular.

What Kinds of Dental Floss Are There?

1. Unwaxed

Comprised of thin nylon, this nonslip floss is typically unflavored. Its thinness makes it well-suited for people whose teeth are very close together, but it may also break easily.

2. Waxed

Also made from nylon, this floss is coated with a thin layer of wax to help it slide gently between teeth. It’s often available in flavors, which may appeal to children who are new to the habit.

3. Dental Tape

This floss is wider and flatter than most other varieties and, therefore, tends to work best for people with more extensive spaces between their teeth. Like traditional floss, it can be either waxed or unwaxed.

4. Super Floss

oral careAlso known as a floss threader, super floss is a convenient oral care tool that comes in pre-cut lengths. For people with dental prosthetics or braces, it may allow for easier navigation between teeth. It’s also useful for anyone who may struggle with dexterity, such as seniors or small children.

5. Electric Flosser

Another alternative for individuals who struggle with traditional floss, the electric flosser is a small tool with a handle and a head that pushes nylon between the teeth using a vibrating motion. Although it’s easy to use, it may be too rough for sensitive gums.

6. Water Flosser

The only oral care tool on this list that doesn’t use floss, water flossers still do an effective job of removing leftover food and plaque from the gum line. Most models are powered by electricity and use a thin, direct stream of water to clean between the teeth and gums. They’re ideal for people with braces or dental work that may make traditional flossing challenging.
