Early childhood learning is a critical step in building the foundation for future education. Developing your child’s math skills at home will give them a head start in their academic career. Here are a few age-appropriate activities that will familiarize your child with math.

5 Ways to Help Your Child Develop Early Math Skills

1. Count Everyday Objects

Use your everyday surroundings as a tool to help your child learn math. Whenever you’re running errands, walking in the park, or going shopping, have them count objects as you go. For instance, you can count stair steps, apples at the grocery store, or trees in the park.

2. Get Cooking

There is plenty of simple math for your child to learn while helping you with cooking and baking. Have them measure and mix ingredients to get them acquainted with fractions. They’ll learn valuable cooking skills, as well as the differences between teaspoons, tablespoons, and other units of measurement.

3. Read Math Stories

Choose books that deal with math, or find ways to incorporate mathematical concepts into their favorite stories. Popular options include “The Three Little Pigs,” and “How Do Dinosaurs Count to Ten?”

4. Build With Shapes

Before children learn geometry, they’ll need to know how to recognize shapes. During preschool, you can help your child learn how to name and recognize simple shapes by building together. Blocks, Legos, and other similar toys are excellent educational tools for early childhood learning. Name the shapes of each piece as you build, and ask your child to arrange or stack their toys into a specific shape.

5. Sing Number Songs

Rhymes and songs can make it easier for children to remember certain concepts, and best of all, kids love them! Look up songs about counting up and down, or get creative and come up with your own together. Sing these in the car, during cleanup, or whenever you have free time.
