When it comes to kitchen remodeling designs, there are a few classic concepts that can't miss as these layouts integrate functionality with aesthetically pleasing forms. Consider using a variation of one of the following for your kitchen upgrade, depending on the size of the available space.

3 Popular Kitchen Layouts to Consider for Your Remodel

1. Galley

kitchen remodelingA Galley, or “walk-through” kitchen, is against two walls, meaning both countertops are parallel. These efficient arrangements use virtually all available space, which means they’re ideal in smaller properties. Additionally, their materials are more affordable than ones for the other layouts because you won’t need corner cabinets. If you like the streamlined look of long, walk-through kitchens, but don't want to give up hosting, replace one of the runs with an island that includes seating on one side. If there isn’t room for an island, you can add a small peninsula at the end of the run instead.

2. L-Shaped

The L-shaped layout has two countertops that are perpendicular to each other and adjoined at the corner. The arrangement eliminates foot traffic from the rest of the household because the entire workspace nestles into one corner of the room. The L-shape is efficient for a small or medium kitchen, but it will leave a lot of open space in a larger one—unless you add an island or casual dining area across from the countertops.

3. Horseshoe

Horseshoe, or U-shaped, kitchens have three walls of countertops and cabinets. When there’s room, they also include an island in the center of the layout. This arrangement is ideal for those who need plenty of workspace and storage room. And if you want an open floor plan between the living room and dining area, the horseshoe layout will allow you to without sacrificing much storage. The three rows of countertops can provide ample storage underneath, so there’s no need to install cabinets above.
