While many homeowners hire an HVAC technician to inspect their air conditioning unit at the start of every summer to ensure optimal performance, it’s crucial to check the unit again at the end of the season. To protect your unit so it remains in good working order until summer comes around again, it’s essential that you winterize various components. If you’re unsure how to do so, here are a few tips for getting started.

How to Prepare Your AC for Winter

1. Clean the Condenser

The condenser is the portion of the AC that is located outside. It contains the cooling fins, tubes, compressor, and fans. You can clean the external components on your own by pulling out twigs and leaves. It’s best to leave the internal components to an HVAC technician, though, as they have the tools and expertise to clean them thoroughly without causing any damage.

2. Cover the Unit

You can find such covers at home improvement stores. Tarps are also a viable option, but they must be secured with bungee cords and rope so they remain in place all winter.

3. Insulate Exposed Components

Cover all exposed wires and piping with foam insulation to protect them from freezing and cracking. Make sure to use strong tape to secure the pipe covers so they won't slip off, and check on your work periodically during the season.
