If you have hearing aids, there are certain factors that you must take into consideration when using a cell phone. Although cell phones and hearing aids have become more compatible in recent years, there are still a few important factors you should keep in mind. The following guide explains some of the issues that can occur when using a cell phone while wearing hearing aids, as well as some tips for avoiding these problems.

What Problems May Occur When Wearing Hearing Aids With Cell Phones?

If you wear hearing aids, you could hear static or an uncomfortably high-pitched ringing or buzzing sound while using a cell phone. This is because phones emit radio frequencies that interfere with the electronic components inside hearing aids. This issue can make it unpleasant to use your cell phone, and without a way to address the problem, it can make it difficult to communicate with other people.

How Can These Problems Be Mitigated?

hearing aidsThanks to laws created by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), you can make informed choices about which cell phones and hearing aids to buy. Both phones and aids are rated to show how clear the audio can be when they’re used with each other. For example, phone retailers are now required to carry phones that have a microphone rating of at least three or higher — this is denoted by an “M3” label on the packaging. Most hearing aids score M2 or better. For best results, purchase cell phones and hearing aids with the highest microphone ratings you can afford.

If your hearing aid has a t-coil (a small copper coil that functions as a wireless antenna), you’ll need to find a cell phone marked at least T3 or T4.

Additionally, look for certain accessories that can make it easier to communicate. Neckloops and ear hooks are excellent for hearing aids with t-coils, because you can plug the microphone into the phone to make the audio clearer. You can also consider an add-on that can reduce interference by blocking the radio frequencies that pass between your hearing aid and the phone.
