A burst pipe is a common plumbing emergency for homeowners when temperatures get cold. The water inside of frozen pipes will expand as it freezes, eventually breaking the pipe and causing an uncontrolled leak. This is a serious issue that will require immediate action to avoid water damage. Here’s what you can do.

4 Steps to Take When Your Plumbing Bursts

1. Shut Off the Water

A burst pipe will leak water non-stop and often at a frightening pace. Go to your home’s water main to switch off the supply to the entire house. The shut-off valve is usually located in the basement crawl space by the water heater or in the ground close to the street.

2. Turn Off the Electricity

Water and electricity make for a dangerous electrocution risk, so it’s better to be careful. Keep family members and pets out of the house until the electricity can be safely shut off.

3. Drain Your Faucets

You want to drain as much of the water from your system as possible; this reduces water damage and prevents further freezing inside your plumbing. Begin by draining the cold water and flushing your toilets a few times. Shut off the water heater, then open up the hot water taps.

4. Call a Plumber

A plumber will locate the burst pipe and replace it. Call them immediately, as you won’t be able to turn your water back on until it’s been repaired. They may recommend taking action to prevent the same issue occurring again. Insulating your pipes will help prevent freezing in the future.
