Whether a new job opportunity suddenly presents itself or there comes a pressing need to be closer to family, moving is an exciting—and somewhat stressful—process. Most would prefer to pack it up during the spring or summer rather than carry heavy boxes back and forth over an icy driveway or worry about a moving truck getting trapped in the snow. However, sometimes, it is inevitable. If you know you’ll be relocating in the coming months, consider the following to make the process easier.

5 Tips for Moving in the Winter

1. Pack for the Weather

Many items you don’t normally consider delicate may become more fragile in cold temperatures and low humidity. Take care of musical instruments, making sure that they stay in the warmest environment possible during the move—your car, rather than the moving truck.  Valuable electronics should get a similar treatment.

2. Keep Pathways Clearmoving

Make sure to have any walkways and access areas, such as the driveway and street, cleared of snowdrifts, ice, and slush. After shoveling, sprinkle the area with salt or kitty litter to keep paths safe to walk on.

3. Start Early

Don’t leave moving in winter to the afternoon. You’ll likely run out of daylight and encounter lower temperatures. This will also give you time to take breaks inside to warm up.

4. Dress Appropriately

If you live in a cold climate, you likely have all kinds of gear to battle the elements. Because moving is a physical activity, dress for active warmth. Wear a base layer that will absorb sweat and insulate damp skin, followed by other lightweight layers that won’t create bulk and make it hard to move. Wear warm socks, gloves, and a hat to keep your extremities warm and preserve body heat. If you live in a sunny winter spot, like Colorado, don’t forget the sunscreen.

5. Call in Professionals

Even if you are used to moving yourself, the extra complications of winter make paying professional movers a smart idea. Not only will they relieve many of the physical demands of the job, but they will also give you more freedom to begin setting up items in your new place—making it feel like “home” that much faster.
