When a faucet leaks, calling the local plumber immediately not only prevents the fixture from rusting but also saves water. Review some common reasons for leaky faucets to keep your home drip-free.

What Causes Faucets to Leak?

1. High Water Pressure

When water pressure in your home is too high because of municipal water supplier adjustments or another issue, it can create leaks. The excess pressure causes the liquid to drip out of fixtures, eventually eroding pipes in addition to increasing your monthly water bill. Noisy water hammer problems can also occur when pressurized water makes contact with valves. Your plumber will adjust the pressure and replace damaged pipes or fixtures to solve your leak issue.

2. Worn or Corroded Parts

plumberFaucet parts eventually wear out or corrode and heighten the chance of leaks. A corroded valve seat from sediment buildup, for example, causes the faucet to leak from the spout. The washer that presses against the valve seat when you use the fixture also wears out from daily friction, resulting in spout drips. A plumber will identify the worn or corroded part and provide the necessary replacements.

3. Plumbing Cracks

Cracked plumbing pipes cause internal leaks that create water damage such as wood rot in addition to encouraging mold growth. They also leak at the faucet nearest to them, resulting in drips and related damage under your sinks.

4. Loose Parts

If there’s a leak around the handle of a faucet, the O-ring, or small disc attached to the stem screw that keeps the handle intact, has likely worn out. The screw itself or packing nuts and adjustment rings can also loosen and cause leaks. If tightening the packing nuts doesn’t solve your problem, contact a plumbing contractor.
