While many people know the importance of flossing, less emphasis is placed on the advantages of using mouthwash. Readily available in dozens of flavors, rinsing your mouth with this solution is a simple way to bolster your existing dental hygiene routine. Here are a few reasons dentists recommend it.

Why Add Mouthwash to Your Daily Routine?

1. Freshen Your Breath

When food residue is left in your mouth, it becomes sustenance for bacteria, which can cause bad breath. When you use mouthwash, you rinse away particulates left behind from brushing and flossing, helping your mouth smell better.

Start by swishing it in your mouth for 30 seconds, followed by gargling it for a minute. Then spit it out without swallowing. If you can, avoid rinsing your mouth with water right afterward, as this can dilute some of its effects.

2. Prevents Cavities

dentistAntiseptic mouthwashes are sometimes prescribed to kill the types of germs that attack tooth enamel, preventing cavities. This can help you avoid additional trips to the dentist. It can also, sometimes, temporarily alleviate toothache pain.

3. Fights Gum Disease

Destroying these germs also helps to soothe gum tissue and prevent inflammation, helping to keep your smile healthy. Since gum disease is connected to other health conditions—including diabetes and heart disease—using mouthwash can have positive effects on your whole body.
