Dental implants offer a host of benefits, from enhancing your smile to protecting the integrity of your jawbone. If your dentist recently recommended this procedure, you might be wondering what to expect. The following guide outlines the three stages of dental implant surgery, so you can move forward with some extra peace of mind.

The 3 Stages of Dental Implant Surgery

1. Before the Procedure

Before your oral surgeon starts the procedure, they’ll complete an initial evaluation of your teeth, gums, and jawbone. This will include taking X-rays and examining your mouth to ensure your jaw is strong enough to accept and support the implant. Once they’ve cleared you for surgery, they’ll provide any necessary preoperative care and suggestions, and they’ll explain your different options for anesthetics.

2. During the Procedure

dental implantsOn the day of the surgery, the doctor will start by answering any questions you may have. Once you’re comfortable, they’ll apply anesthesia and begin the procedure. They’ll start by removing the compromised tooth or teeth and preparing the jawbone for the implant. Once the jawbone is ready, the doctor will wake you up and send you home. You’ll have a few days to recover before coming back for a second session.

During your second appointment, the oral surgeon will place the implant. In the final appointment, they’ll secure the dental implant with a screw and attach the artificial tooth on top.

3. After the Procedure

The recovery period after dental implant surgery is, on average, about four weeks. In the first week or so, you may experience some swelling, tenderness, and bruising. During this time, utilize over-the-counter pain relievers and ice packs to minimize your symptoms. Eat soft foods that aren’t spicy or acidic, as these may irritate the surgery site. After four weeks, your dentist will have you come in for a post-operative appointment. During this session, they’ll evaluate your body’s healing process and see if any adjustments are necessary.
