Whether for a job opportunity or to be closer to loved ones, a move to another state is a chance to put down roots in a new environment. But an interstate move requires some planning and preparation that shorter moves do not. Before the movers arrive, follow these three tips for a smooth, less stressful relocation to another state.

Tips for Moving Out of State

1. Downsize

An interstate move is the perfect occasion to get organized, streamline your possessions, and get rid of those things that are no longer needed. Downsizing a bit will also help save you time and energy packing and result in a lighter load for your movers.

moversGo room by room and make three piles: things to be packed, things to be thrown away, and things to be donated. If an item isn’t in regular use in your household, chances are it’s not necessary to bring along.

Consider your destination as well. If you’re moving from Ohio to Florida, for instance, a large winter wardrobe is likely not needed.

2. Plan to Get Your Driver’s License

One of the first things you should do after arriving in a new state is to get a driver's license. Before relocating, know the proper steps to follow and set aside all the paperwork you may need to obtain a license, such as a birth certificate or Social Security card.

Pack these items separately and keep them with you throughout the move. Also, many states require new arrivals to take a written driver's test even if they have a valid license from another state, so you may need to set aside some time to study and brush up.

3. Forward Your Mail

The postal service allows you to change your address online and choose the activation date. There’s a minimal charge that verifies your identity.

If you receive important snail mail, like Social Security payments or paychecks, inform the sender in advance of the move. Also, cancel your subscription to the local newspaper and consider starting a subscription to your new hometown paper.
