The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of your neck. It produces several hormones that regulate metabolism, internal temperature, and growth. However, certain health problems can stop it from functioning properly. As a result, you may experience unnatural tiredness, loss of appetite, muscle cramps, facial swelling, and depression, among other symptoms. If you have any of the conditions listed below, it may be worthwhile to seek thyroid management.

3 Issues That Can Be Helped by Thyroid Management

1. Autoimmune Diseases

Sometimes, thyroid problems can be caused by an autoimmune disorder that is causing your antibodies to attack the thyroid gland by mistake. Possible culprits include autoimmune thyroiditis, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. These are types of hypothyroidism, meaning that they stop your thyroid from producing enough hormones. These conditions generally require that you take medications to replace these hormones for the rest of your life.

You may also have hyperthyroidism, which is the opposite of hypothyroidism; it causes the thyroid to produce too much of its hormones. A common example is Graves’ Disease. This is easy to treat with radioactive iodine therapy, anti-thyroid medications, beta-blockers, or possibly surgery and often goes into remission after a few months or years.

2. Iodine Deficiency

If a doctor thinks you might not be getting enough, they can order a urine or blood test to check. Then, you’ll be put on a diet full of iodine-rich foods like fish, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables.

3. Nodules

Nodules can also form within your thyroid gland. These are almost always benign, and many of them are so small that you don’t know they’re there. However, they sometimes grow large enough that you can see and feel them. You might also experience weight loss, excessive perspiration, or find you have a rapid or irregular heartbeat. A doctor will probably do a physical exam and a thyroid test. Medication may resolve the problem.
