Sciatica is a pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, and it can be debilitating for some people. The symptoms include a sharp, burning sensation that begins in the lower back and extends through the buttocks and thighs—it can also cause tingling or numbness in the legs and weakness in the feet.  If you have this condition, here’s what you can do to manage the discomfort.

Do:

Get a massage.

Massage can relax your muscles and improve circulation, reducing pain. Getting a treatment can be as effective as non-steroidal pain medication at reducing sciatica symptoms. The therapist’s rhythmic pressure eases the muscle tension that puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. Massage also triggers the release of endorphins, the happy hormones, which can increase feelings of well-being and increase the pain threshold.

Exercise.

sciaticaAlthough it may seem counterintuitive, resting won’t alleviate sciatic pain—it’ll cause more muscle tightness. Stretching and low-impact exercise can significantly reduce sciatica. Focus stretching on the hamstrings as tightness in this area is a cause of sciatic nerve pain. Walking and swimming are also effective for managing pain because they reduce inflammation and boost the production of endorphins, which minimize pain.

Don’t:

Slouch.

Maintaining good posture can prevent nerve compression, which causes sciatica. Focus on standing and sitting properly, and, if necessary, use a lumbar pillow behind your back to provide extra support.

Strain your back.

If your job requires you to lift and carry heavy objects, use proper form to prevent pain and manage your symptoms. Use your legs instead of your back when lifting, evenly distribute weight when carrying items, and hold heavy objects as close to your chest as possible to protect the spine. You should also avoid sudden movements that can irritate your back muscles and increase pain.
