Whether you collect them or received one as a gift, vintage wall clocks and freestanding timepieces require a certain level of care and maintenance to remain in optimal shape. If you have an antique clock, you have to understand the components that enable it to run and function properly. To take better care of your vintage wall clock or freestanding piece, consider the different types and the parts that power them.

How to Wind Various Antique Clocks

There are several different types of wind-up clocks, which is why you must identify what style of clock you have before attempting to perform maintenance. While they may have some parts in common, there are slight variations in how you operate these various models.

British Dial

A British dial clock typically contains only one set of gears and a winding point, which is referred to as a timepiece. To wind a British dial clock, place the number 11 key or number 10 crank into the winding point and turn it clockwise for 16 revolutions.

Antique Grandfather Clocks

vintage wall clock Mason, OHGrandfather clocks are comprised of weights and a corresponding winding point in the dial. One weight keeps time and controls the hands and pendulum, while the other powers the noise for the hour strike. To wind up this piece, place the crank into the winding points and turn it clockwise for 13 revolutions.

Pendulum Clocks

A pendulum clock is another style of vintage wall clock or freestanding piece that requires winding up to power the various components. Similar to the dial clocks, these need a unique key or crank to be correctly wound. Depending on how many sets of gears your clock has, which can range from one to three, you will insert this key or crank into the winding point, either counterclockwise or clockwise. If you have more than one winding point, you will turn the others in the same direction as the first.
