Gum disease is one of the most well-known oral health issues. However, not everyone knows how it affects the mouth or how to prevent it. While basic brushing habits will help protect you against gum disease, there are other ways to boost your oral health. Here’s a quick look at gum disease, its causes, and how to deal with it.

What is Gum Disease, & What Causes It?

Also known as periodontitis, gum disease is an infection in the soft tissues of your gums. It makes them recede, weakening them so that they can’t support your teeth.

gum diseaseGum disease is typically caused by improper dental hygiene. If you’re not brushing and flossing twice daily to remove all the plaque and tartar that accumulates on your teeth and gums due to the food and drinks you consume — especially those with sugar —then you’re at risk for developing gum disease. You’re also at risk if you smoke, chew tobacco, have an unbalanced diet, struggle with obesity or diabetes, or have become pregnant.

What are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?

The most obvious symptom of the disease is pain in your gums. They will also become purplish or red, swollen, and easily irritated, especially when you eat. When you brush your teeth or floss, they’ll likely bleed. As gum disease progresses, you may notice gaps between your teeth, which may also loosen and look abnormally long. You may also experience halitosis, as well as pus. Your teeth may become more sensitive, and your bite could become crooked.

How Can Gum Disease be Treated or Prevented?

Focus on factors that you can control, such your diet. Eat less sugar, since sugar is the substance most likely to attract bacteria that will infect your gums. If you smoke or chew tobacco, make efforts to quit.

As always, practice good dental hygiene. Ensure that you are brushing and flossing regularly, and consider using antimicrobial mouthwash for extra protection. In addition, visit your dentist at least twice a year for a professional teeth cleaning. If your gums are already infected, the dentist can also prescribe you a medicated mouthwash to deal with the infection.
