In addition to sharpening a person’s vision, glasses are now a fashion accessory. As part of how you present yourself to the world, it’s important to choose frames that suit your features and personal aesthetic. Next time you get an eye exam and an updated prescription from the optometrist, keep the following in mind when choosing a new color for your frames.

4 Factors to Consider When Choosing Frame Color

1. Eye Color

Do you want frames that enhance your natural eye color or provide a contrast? If you opt for the former, look at glasses in similar shades to your irises; for the latter, consider complementary colors.

For example, make blue eyes look richer by choosing blue or gray frames or create a striking contrast by going with brown or red. Brown, green, and hazel eyes go well with similarly earthy or warm tones, like green or gold, and contrast beautifully with pinks and purples.

2. Hair Color

glassesCool blond hair has platinum, ashy, or strawberry tones, while warm blond hair is usually darker and more bronze. Cool brown hair is ashy as well, and warm brown hair is more reddish. Blue-black hair is cool in comparison to its warmer brown-black counterpart.

Cool hair colors work best with similarly cool colors, as well as black. Warm- or earth-colored frames are most attractive with warm hair colors. Gray and white hair are flexible enough to pair wonderfully with anything but brown or beige.

3. Skin Color

Pale or medium skin should be given glasses with warm- or earth-colored frames. If your skin is pale or medium but has pinkish or bluish undertones instead, focus on neutral frames. Deep skin with gold undertones goes best with similar brown and gold hues, but cool deep skin with blue undertones looks great with blue, purple, green, and black.

4. Goal & Setting

Where will you be wearing these glasses? In a traditional business or education setting, opt for traditional styles and moderate, safe colors that can pair well with any outfit, like brown or black. For situations when you can be more personally expressive and creative, go for bolder colors and less common shapes. Whatever you choose, make sure you love them and feel like yourself.
