The majority of calves that die at birth perish as a result of injuries sustained during the calving process. This is why, as a farmer, you should know when and how to help your cow give birth. In addition to keeping some key veterinarian supplies on hand, you can also follow these tips.

How to Assist When Your Cow Is in Labor

1. Recognize Normal Calving

Most cows are able to give birth on their own without human assistance. When you notice a pregnant cow moving away from the herd, allow her to begin the birthing process on her own without interference. However, if she appears to be under duress for a half hour or more without signs of the calf emerging, closer observation is necessary. Under normal scenarios, the nose and the baby’s two front feet should present first.

2. Ensure Cleanliness

Cleanliness is important at all times, but it’s especially necessary when a cow is giving birth. If you end up having to assist in the birthing process, avoid introducing harmful bacteria into the birthing process by making sure all equipment and veterinarian supplies are properly disinfected, and that your arms are scrubbed up to your shoulders.

3. Aid in Delivery

Wait until the mother is pushing, then use the rope to pull the calf out and down. If the calf’s rear legs are emerging first, tie the rope to the legs and pull the baby out as fast as you can.

4. Make Sure the Delivered Calf Is Breathing

It typically takes between 30 seconds to a minute for a just-born calf to start breathing. You can assist in the process by wiping amniotic fluid away from the baby’s nose, putting water on its ears, and making sure the calf’s airways are open by extending its head upwards and breathing into its nose.
