Fall is in the air, which means it’s time to turn on your furnace for the first time. You’ll be relying on this system to keep your home comfortable throughout the autumn and winter, so it’s best to ensure it’s ready to work. Some simple heating service efforts will ensure your system functions reliably and efficiently, as listed below.

Fall Checklist for Your Furnace

1. Schedule a Heating Service

This is the most important step you should take every autumn. During a heating service, your HVAC contractor will clean and inspect the system. They’ll give you a fresh air filter, lubricate the moving parts, and check for any potential problems. They’ll locate wearing parts and replace them now before an issue causes expensive damage or leaves you without heat on a cold night.

2. Clean Your Vents

Use the brush attachment on your vacuum to clean all dust off all vents. If there is more stubborn grime, remove the vent covers and soak them. Move furniture or other items away so each vent has a direct line to the main part of the room.

3. Program the Thermostat

If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, then install one. They’re affordable and will pay for themselves in energy savings. Program your thermostat to avoid running your furnace more than necessary. Keep it at the temperature you prefer while at home. Lower it by 7 to 10 degrees while you are gone for the day at work, and by 5 degrees while everyone is sleeping at night. Doing this can save you up to 10% on your heating costs.
