Some fabrics are more delicate than others. This means that while you can throw the majority of your clothing into laundromat machines, some pieces will require special laundry care. Use the information below to understand which fabrics in your hamper should always be hand-washed at home.

3 Fabrics to Wash by Hand

1. Acetate

This is a synthetic fiber that is used to give clothing a beautiful draping effect. The material can be damaged by heat or rough handling, and its color could also transfer during washes.

Hand wash all pieces that include any amount of acetate using cold water and laundry soap. Avoid any products that have acetone, since it may dissolve this type of fiber.

2. Cashmere

laundry careCashmere is made from the soft undercoat of the cashmere goat, and makes for very comfortable sweaters and gloves.

Unfortunately, this material can lose its shape in the wash. Hand-wash using cold water and baby shampoo or a soap designed for cashmere. Soak it for around 10 minutes and rinse. Let it dry flat without wringing it out, then fold it to preserve its shape.

3. Silk

Check your silk garments for laundry care instructions. Some pieces are labeled “dry clean only.” If yours aren’t, then you can wash them by hand.

Use a soap designed for delicate fabrics or baby shampoo. Rinse and roll the item in a towel to press out most of the moisture, then hang it to dry.
