If you are having a large outdoor event, such as a market, concert, or a smaller outdoor wedding or party, it is integral to make sure it will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. This includes providing ample accessibility at the event and having ADA-compliant portable toilets. Learn more about hosting ADA-accessible events in the guide below.

4 Tips for Hosting ADA-Compliant Events

1. Parking

The event will need to accommodate handicapped attendees by supplying adequate and specifically designated handicap-access parking. The parking should be located as close as possible to an accessible entrance, and include a van accessible spot at a minimum of 132” wide. There should be one handicap parking slot for every 25 regular ones and one van-accessible area per six handicap spots.

2. Entry

At least one entry to the event must be accessible. There should be a ramp or lift as an alternative to stairs, and a door that is wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair. Turnstiles are not considered accessible, so if they are included at the event, make sure there is another accessible and well-marked way in.

3. Portable Toilets

The entrance needs to be 32” wide and have a 5-foot turning area or within a 3-foot turning area for multiple-point turns. At least 5% of all available toilets at the event must be accessible. Trailer-style portable sanitation must have at least one accessible stall.

4. Paths & Ramps

Access to the entire area of the event should be accessible with pathways 36 inches wide or more, and a 60” by 60” wide area every 200 feet to allow wheelchairs to pass side by side. Any elevation changes higher than 1/4” require a beveled slope. An elevation higher than 1/2” will require a ramp or elevator. Ramps themselves in temporary settings must be no more than 30” high, as the required 1” of elevation gain for every foot of distance would be impractical.
