Whether for home or commercial use, a lawn mower has a life span. Repeated breakdowns, parts issues, and other problems usually mean yours is nearing the end. Recognizing when it’s time for a replacement will ensure you don’t waste time and money trying to keep your failing equipment alive.

When to Replace Your Lawn Mower

1. It Vibrates

A vibrating lawn mower often means that the rod and crankshaft in the engine aren’t working correctly. It’s often accompanied by knocking sounds, and the vibrations can range from mild to violent. It can make mowing effectively and safely impossible. These parts aren’t cheap or easy to replace, which is why it’s recommended that you invest in a new mower.

2. It Smokes & Burns Through Oil

lawn-mower-webster-grovesSmoke is always a cause for concern. If the lawn mower smokes when on, it may mean the engine is worn down and requires parts replacements. It may also mean you’re low on oil or that the air filter needs to be replaced—two issues that won’t require a new unit. If you notice that you have to replace the oil more frequently, however, it may mean the oil is leaking into the cylinder, which can impact performance and waste fuel.

3. It’s RPM’s are fluctuating up and down

While this isn’t a catastrophic issue it typically means that your carburetor is on it’s last leg.  With fuel issues being at the forefront of most repair needs it’s not something to ignore.  You may just need to rebuild your carburetor or it could require a carb replacement.  So if your noticing this issue it’s best to call the service department sooner rather than later.
