Your home's gutters are essential to guide water away from your eaves and siding, preventing water damage. During the winter, they're especially necessary to deal with rain along with the occasional snow and ice. This can get tricky with all the leaves falling, so this fall, be sure to perform yearly maintenance.

Gutter Repair & Maintenance Suggestions

1. Clean Them Out

Leaves, sticks, dirt, and even bird and rodent nests can clog the gutters. When this happens, water can back up, overflowing onto the eaves or the walls and forcing its way up under roofing shingles. You or your roofing contractor should clean out all the debris, especially if you have nearby trees that shed their autumn leaves onto your roof.

2. Perform Repairs

GutterWhile you're cleaning your gutters, inspect them for any obvious holes or stains that indicate a leak. Check each joint in particular since this is the most common place for a problem.

If you find any openings that shouldn’t be there, get them sealed before the weather turns wet and colder. Additionally, make sure the brackets holding the pipes up are secure and create a smooth slope toward the downspouts so the water will flow in the right direction. If there's any sagging, you may have to have them reinstalled.

3. Install Covers

Also called gutter guards, these covers exist to minimize the amount of debris that builds up inside. With them in place, you won't have to clean the area nearly as often, and you're less likely to develop clogs.

If you can get guards installed before the leaves fall, that's ideal, but even if it's too late for this year, getting them in place now can make maintenance much easier for the rest of the cold season, and you’ll be looking good at the end of next summer.
