Winter is a magical season, as you’ll finally have the opportunity to get a cozy fire going in your home. Before you enjoy the ambiance of the flames and warmth, you need to prepare your fireplace for use. Taking these steps ensures you’ll have a safe and warm winter.

A Winterization Guide for Fireplaces

1. Inspect & Sweep the Chimney

You’ll need to bring in a professional to inspect the chimney for you. They will check that each part of the system is in good working condition, including the gasket, blower, damper, and firebox. They’ll look for damage to the chimney structure itself, such as loose bricks or cracks in the lining. Have them sweep it or remove any creosote buildup and other debris inside the chimney. Creosote is a highly flammable material that could spark and cause a chimney fire if it’s allowed to build up.

2. Install a Cap

fireplaceHave a cap installed if your chimney doesn’t currently have one. These affordable parts are installed on the top of your chimney. It keeps stray sparks from exiting the chimney and sparking a fire nearby. It will also keep pests, debris, and rain from entering your home.

3. Check or Install Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Carbon monoxide is an invisible and odorless gas that is a byproduct of combustion. Your chimney is designed to funnel it safely out of the home, but improper maintenance or use could allow the gas to build up inside your home. Test your alarms and replace their batteries when needed. If something does happen that causes a buildup of gas, your family will be warned so you can get out safely.
