Crispy and full of flavor, fish and chips is a widely popular seafood dish. Whether you prefer it dipped in ketchup, doused in malt vinegar, or slathered in tartar sauce, few diners will turn down this mouthwatering meal. But, do you know where the combination originally came from? Next time you’re eating at a seafood restaurant, impress your friends and family with the history of fish and chips.

The Origins of Fish & Chips

The exact birthplace of fish and chips is unclear. The battered and fried fish were thought to be brought to Britain by Jewish refugees from Spain and Portugal. Both France and Belgium still claim chips as their own. As for who combined the two into the iconic seafood dish of today, nobody can say for sure.

Lancashire and London seafood-Orange-Beach-ALeach assert ownership over the invention. Some claim that the first fish and chips shop was opened in 1860 East London by a Jewish immigrant, Joseph Malin. Others insist that in 1963, entrepreneur John Lees of Lancashire first coined the pairing while selling fish and chips out of a wooden hut in the market.

Regardless of who pioneered it, fish and chips quickly became a crowd favorite during the Industrial Revolution, offering a quick and tasty meal to the growing working class.

Its Reputation as a Comfort Food

The historical importance of fish and chips didn’t just stop at the Industrial Revolution. During World War I and World War II, fish and chips was one of the few dishes to never be rationed in England.

At a time when luxuries were scarce, this warm, satisfying dish provided comfort to workers and families cutting back on resources. Fish and chips shops, affectionately referred to as “chippys,” sustained constant lines. The meal became a critical part of every family’s diet.

Due to the development of the steam trawler, fish and chips quickly spread to Scotland and Ireland, and it eventually reached the United States. Today, it continues to hold its reputation as a casual comfort food that anyone can enjoy.
