A lawn mower is a long-term investment. Understanding common pitfalls and proper maintenance will ensure you of years of efficient mowing. To prevent your mower from going on the fritz, avoid these three maintenance mishaps.

Common Ways to Damage a Mower

1. Not Draining the Gasoline

Ethanol-based gasoline dirties and thickens over time. Sticky, gunky gas can clog fuel lines, dirty a tank, damage a carburetor, and cause operational problems. Never use your lawn mower to store fuel. After every season, drain your mower’s gas tank or run the machine until all the fuel in the tank has been expended.

2. Not Checking the Oil

lawn mowerLike all motors, a lawn mower requires plenty of oil to operate smoothly. Check the oil often for any floating debris or contamination. Before you refill a mower with gas, check the oil. If it looks suspect, remove the tank plug and let the oil drain into a metal container. You can recycle it at many auto parts stores and some gas stations. You can then replace it with oil recommended by the manufacturer to keep engine parts functioning safely.

3. Not Cleaning It

Your mower plows through a lot of grass, thatch, leaves, and debris. This organic matter may become compacted in hard-to-reach places and interfere with function. After each use, hose down your mower, giving the undercarriage plenty of attention. Hosing down a mower takes only a moment and goes a long way toward keeping it in excellent condition.
